The dust storm in Australia lasted for a day. It began in South Australia and the Northern Territory and then moved eastwards and north. In Sydney, it began before dawn and lasted well into the afternoon, whilst it moved into Brisbane just before noon and was still hanging around at midnight. North Queensland was expected to experience the storm within one-two days.

A nearly-continuous dust storm swept Mars from late June to October, 2001, a period of over 4 months. Previously, Mariner 9 observed a three-month dust storm on its arrival in November, 1971. The exact mechanisms that drive the storms is still being observed, but it correlates with heating of the Martian atmosphere and seems to increase this temperature. Rises of up to 40 degrees C were observed (from near or below freezing to temperatures above 0°C).
