I purchased 4 rechargeable batteries plus battery charger July 2006. I take many photos for my eBay business and have found that in the last few weeks when I recharge the batteries, they only last for a few photos. I thought rechargeable batteries lastest more than 2 years. Can someone let me know the life of rechargeable batteries. Thank you.

Depends on what you do. Like if you were to power night vision goggles, probably not that long depending on how much batteries you put in. But if you were to pop one into a GameBoy, you could probably make it last a week or so.

Can you use 1.5v rechargeable batteries instead of 1.2v?

Yes - there are 1.5v rechargeable batteries available although very scarse - e.g. GRANDCELL alkaline rechargeable batteries made by Grand Battery Technologies in Canada. 0% Cadmium, 0% Mercury. Available in AA and AAA sizes. If your question is can normal 1.5 volt regular batteries be used instead of rechargeable 1.2 volt batteries, the answer is yes. I do it with my camera batteries all the time when I forget to charge the NiCds. Tip always use alkaline to prevent damage if you forget your batteries in the device for an extended period.

How does a rechargeable battery work and what are the cathode and anode equations for this battery?

A rechargeable battery (also known as a storage battery) is a group of one or more electrochemical cells. They are known as secondary cells because their electrochemical reactions are electrically reversible. Rechargeable batteries come in many different sizes and use different combination of chemicals; common types include: lead acid, nickel cadmium (NiCd), nickel metal hydride (NiMH), lithium ion (Li-ion), and lithium ion polymer (Li-ion polymer). Rechargeable batteries can offer economic and environmental benefits compared to disposable batteries. Some rechargeable battery types are available in the same sizes as disposable types. While the rechargeable cells have a higher initial cost, rechargeable batteries can be recharged many times. Proper selection of a rechargeable battery system can reduce toxic materials sent to landfills compared to an equivalent series of disposable batteries.[dubious - discuss] For example, battery manufacturers of NiMH rechargeable batteries claim a service life of 100-1000 charge cycles for their batteries.

Where are lead storage batteries used?

Mainly in transportation. Automotive batteries and marine batteries are (somewhat different types of) lead-acid storage batteries. They're also often used as the battery backup for telecommunications equipment or data centers.

Which battery generates more power?

Below is a link of a diagram of battery capacities I found on Wikipedia. If you need batteries for a project I would get NIMH as lithium are very sensitive to overcharging. If you are using non rechargeable batteries, they are difficult to replace so I would get a lithium one, though they are expensive. If you can easily replace them, use alkaline. You can get cheap common sizes of both rechargeable and non rechargeable batteries from another link I added below.
