Only about 20% of anorexics will die, but it can take anywhere from a few months to many years for that to happen, all depending on the individual and the serverity of the disease, and any treatments that were done.

The time of death is different for every person suffering from anorexia. Some can survive years with the illness, but have a really poor quality of life. Others only survive weeks. They may seem fine, but may simply drop dead from heart failure or a number of other problems.

Generally, a healthy person can survive without no food at all for about forty days, providing they are drinking plenty of water. But you do not know how your body will react to going into starvation mode and some have died in a far shorter time.

Anorexia is an awful awful illness. It affects the whole body as the whole body relies on nutrition to survive... the skin, hair, kidneys, bones, heart, eyes... I could go on and on. As the body slows down from lack of nutrition, it adapts in the most amazing way. However, in order to do this, it pulls the nutrients from where it is stored in the body. Then the bones weaken, the hair falls out, the kidneys can fail, heart attack, etc.

I only hope that whether you are worried for someone else, or you are thinking of this for yourself, that you can find the strength to seek help for either yourself or whoever it may be

There is no duration. It is most absolutely not a diet in which it will end, anorexia is a mental disorder and an illness. It will stay with the victim until help is properly assured and even then, there will be relapses. Sometimes, help with a professional won't help either. You want to know the average duration? From when you first develop it till the point help is reached or for the rest of your life.

There is no set of time. With increased awareness and improved treatment methods - both medical and psychological - more and more anorexia patients are treated and working towards recovery. There are still far too many who do not receive treatment or adequate care, of course. If a person were to stop eating entirely, the body would shut down and die after about 3 weeks. Many anorexics eat enough just to survive, however, so they can persist with the disease for years (including cycles of recovery and relapse).

It depends on treatment they receive, their weight, heart health, and mental state.

Most people will suffer directly from the disorder for maybe a decade (10 years) or so, but it is a disease that will almost always be with the person for the rest of their life.

They can be bulimic but not anorexic. Actually, a person can certainly be mentally anorexic regardless of their weight. I believe that weight or BMI should not be so important when diagnosing anorexia. Anyone can be psychologically anorexic.
