indefinatley... once you are a citizen you can come and go as you please, as long as you are not on any probation of course. You can also be a dual citizen, meaning be a citizen of more then one country as I am. I live in the U.S. but I am also a citizen of Poland. I could move to Poland and live their until I old and come back here for my retirement if I wish, or vice versa..

A US citizenship can only be voluntarily relinquished. Even if you undergo a 'potentially expatriating act' such as serving as an officer in a foreign military, it is still assumed you intend to retain US citizenship unless you specifically wish otherwise.

In any case, simply remaining outside of the US is not counted as a potentially expatriating act, but if you sought naturalisation in that other country, with the express intention to relinquish US citizenship, would you lose it.

As long as you can afford it. US citizenship doesn't expire after some period of being away. You may need to renew your passport before returning, if you've been away so long that your passport has expired (10 years) but any consulate should be able to handle that for you.

It makes no difference how long a US citizen of ANY age is out of the country. "Once a US Citizen, always a US Citizen." -UNLESS- you renounce your US citizenship and become a citizen of another country. However, since the question is about a 'minor' child that eventuality should not arise.
