The food will stay cold for about four hours if you don't open the door, according to U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. Freezers can keep their contents frozen a little longer—full freezers will be okay for about 48 hours, and half-full freezers are good for 24 hours.

If the power is going to be out longer than that, dry or block ice can keep your food cold until the electricity comes back on. You can make your own ice during winter power outages by filling containers with water and leaving them outside, but don't put your food out in the snow to keep it cold—that's asking for trouble from your local wildlife.

The fridge doesn't immediately warm up once the power is turned off. As long as the door stays closed, it will remain cool enough to preserve the food for a good 24 hours. After 24 to 30 hours, though, you'll have to find someplace else to store the food very quickly, or you'll have to toss it all.

If power loss happens in the winter (where there is actual snow) you can insert a clean container of snow to help keep foods fresh longer.

The length of time that food can last in a refrigerator without power depends on several factors, including the temperature of the food, the surrounding environment, and how well the refrigerator is insulated. In general, a refrigerator will keep food safely chilled for about 4 to 6 hours if the door remains closed.

However, it's important to note that perishable foods, such as meat, poultry, seafood, dairy products, and leftovers, should be discarded if the refrigerator has been without power for more than 4 hours and the temperature inside rises above 40°F (4°C). These foods are more susceptible to bacterial growth, which can lead to foodborne illnesses.

To maximize the amount of time food stays cold during a power outage, you can take the following steps:

Keep the refrigerator door closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature inside.

Avoid opening the freezer door to prevent cold air from escaping.

Use a refrigerator or appliance thermometer to monitor the temperature inside. If the temperature rises above 40°F (4°C), it's best to discard perishable items.

Consider using coolers with ice or frozen gel packs to temporarily store perishable foods if the power outage is prolonged.

Remember to prioritize food safety and use your best judgment when assessing the condition of perishable items after a power outage. When in doubt, it's better to discard potentially unsafe food to avoid the risk of foodborne illness.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, the refrigerator will keep food cold for about 4 hours if it is unopened. "A full freezer will hold the temperature for approximately 48 hours (24 hours if it is half full) if the door remains closed. Obtain dry or block ice to keep your refrigerator as cold as possible if the power is going to be out for a prolonged period of time. Fifty pounds of dry ice should hold an 18-cubic foot full freezer for 2 days. Plan ahead and know where dry ice and block ice can be purchased."

It'll be fine. The fridge doesn't immediately warm up once the power is turned off. As long as the door stays closed, it will remain cool enough to preserve the food for a good 24 hours. How long food will last in a fridge that has just lost its electrical power depends very much on where you live and the season of the year!

If you live in Australia, New Zealand or South America it will be Winter whilst in Europe or North America it is Summer.

As a very rough rule of thumb, don't depend on food staying fresh for more than half a day.

The best advice is to open the door of the unit as little as possible because doing that will help prevent warm air from getting into it.

Remember this: cold air is much heavier than warm air so every time you open that door lots of cold air falls out and down onto the floor of your room!

Here's another good tip: keep some milk outside the fridge in a bottle or a jug. That way you won't have to open the door to get the milk out to make coffee or tea and then have to open it again just to put it back!

Doing something as simple as that should help ensure that just that milk goes sour, well before all the rest of your food goes off.

Probably.. you need to keep your refrigerator closed though. It will keep the cool inside. I had to do this sitting through hurricane Rita last year.. Our power was out for at least a good 14 hours. We also put blocks of ice in the deep freezer in case the power went out longer. I can't give you an exact time but the four hour rule doesn't quite apply in a cool fridge. NO. Sorry, but any food whether cooked or not will after approx. four hours of no refrigeration will have grown bacteria. Do not use ANY food left for such a long period of time, it will more than likely contain salmonella, botulisim and other bacterial contaminants. An exception obviously would be any canned or bottled juice, soda, etc that has not had seal broken/opened. Never use milk even if it is still sealed!
