In some U.S. states, you must then wait a prescribed number of days, in other U.S. states, the marriage can be performed the very same day. As soon as the completed marriage license is filed with the appropriate town/city/county clerk by the marriage officiant (i.e., clergy or judge), the marriage becomes official.
Citizenship does not alter the length of time that this process takes. It takes the same amount of time whether your spouse is a U.S. citizen or not.
