Salt water conducts electricity better than pure water (no or low salt). So the conductivity of the soil gives a measure of how much salt is present. The measure of conductivity is in units of mmho/cm, dS/m, or mS/cm. These units are equivalent and are approximately equal to 640 mg/l salt.

To measure salinity you could use a Salinity Hydrometer, or you could use the various number of probes, monitors or meters out there, ranging from the cheap and cheerful to the all-singing all dancing models.
