I wouldn t recommend trying this yourself. Find a guy with a hoist to get vehicle up in the air. And instead of putting in a typical frost plug, although inexpensive to purchase, would be difficult to put in with rust and cleaning and pressing in. Just go to auto parts store and purchase a block heater. this has rubber expandable gasket. May even find that type of frost plug. In Canada, another block heater is the answer. Cheers.
well if its the 4.0 and this should go for most of the engines as well, you remove your water outlet which is right above the water pump and right below the valve cover, theres only a few nuts hold it on the head, just unbolt those and remove the water outlet and you'll see the thermostat, most of the time you should be able to take out with your hands but if its stuck in there pretty good a pair of needle nose pilers should do the trick and make sure you have all your gaskets when reinstalling everything
Your going to have to either pull the engine, or take the cylinder head off to access it, unless you can knock the plug out with a homemade tool and put a rubber expandable plug back in. hope this helps!
If you find out, let me know. I was lucky enough to get the old one out, and then installed a rubber expansion plug. It seems to be working...for now. Good luck.
behind the exhaust manifold on the drivers side, a real pain to get to, just remove the manifold to get at them, much easier less headaches and knuckle busters. Good Luck Alex C. Las Vegas
