For several reasons.

  • They were being persecuted by mobs, and had been for many years. In Missouri the governor actually issued an extermination order, making it "legal" to kill Mormons.
  • Joseph Smith prophesied that the saints would find rest in the rocky mountains.
  • Because nobody else wanted the land so they could be free from persecution.

Well, he didn't really decide to. The government in Illinois told Brigham Young that the Mormons needed to leave Illinois by the spring of 1846. Joseph Smith had taught for several years that the Saints were eventually going to move to the Rocky Mountains, so Brigham Young did what Joseph Smith said they should do, and moved the Saints to the Rocky Mountains.

Brigham Young moved the people west because the government in Illinois asked them to leave, and Joseph Smith had prophesied that they would only find peace in the Rocky Mountains. Brigham saw the Salt Lake Valley in a dream and lead the people there.

Brigham Young moved the Mormons to Utah because they had been asked to leave Illinois and had already faced violence and oppression in many areas throughout the west and midwest. Joseph Smith had prophesied that they would find peace in the Rocky Mountains, so that is where they went.

It was very important. He led them to the Salt Lake Valley and set up Salt Lake City, now a sprawling metropolis that is the capital of Utah.
