On average, the hottest it gets in summer would be around the mid 30's.

Of course, South Africa is quite a large country and has two major climate differences in the North and South. Since the Southern coast of South Africa is relatively close to Antarctica, it receives cooler winds and therefore rarely sees temperatures above 35 deg Celsius, while the Northern part of South Africa can reach highs of 45 deg Celsius.

Bearing in mind that the continent of Africa stretches some 8,000 km from north to south and crosses the Tropic of Cancer, the Equator and the Tropic of Capricorn it is logical to assume that there is a range of temperatures and not a single average temperature.

Varying on the location temperatures range from the lower 90's to upper 90's with heat index in the 100's degrees F. Since the continent of Africa is centered on the equator, the climate tends to be hot. This includes the arid deserts of northern Africa, the savanna grasslands, and the dense tropical jungles. Only on the coasts and in the higher elevations do more moderate temperatures prevail.

The greatest range of temperatures occurs in the deserts, with daytime temperatures as high as 45 °C , plunging to as low as 5 °C in the cloudless nights. The savanna temperatures average 25° to 30° C during the day. The rain-forests can reach over 30°C, with very high relative humidity.

An example of temperature moderation

The city of Kampala, Uganda, near the Equator has a temperature range from 16.5 °C (night) to 25.4°C (day) in July, and a range of 18.1° to 28.4°C in January. Kinshasa, in the Congo, averages about 5 degrees warmer (23° to 32°C). The difference is that Kampala is at an elevation of 1190 meters and on the shore of Lake Victoria.

Other oddities are elevated areas such as Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania which is covered in snow; there are also two temperate "Mediterranean" climatic zones - one in southern Africa the other in north western Africa.

Refer to the related vegetation map (link) - the distribution of vegetation is a clear indicator of temperature and rainfall.
