The minimum distance between Jupiter and Earth is 365 million miles (588 million km). Since one light year (the distance light travels in one year) is approximately 5,870,000,000,000 miles, the minimum distance between Jupiter and Earth is 0.0000621 light years.

The distance changes because both Earth and Jupiter are orbiting the Sun and both Earth and Jupiter have elliptical orbits round the Sun.

There are therefore occasions when Jupiter and Earth are both on the same side of the Sun, but as Earth goes round the Sun much faster then Jupiter there are other occasions when Earth is on one side of the Sun and Jupiter is on the other.

The minimum distance that Jupiter comes to the Earth is about 365 million miles, while the maximum distance is about 577 million miles.

If you are interested in the precise distance from Earth to any other body in the solar system at the "present", the open-source planetarium program Stellarium is an excellent, and free, option. Download it from stellarium.org. For example, on March 5, 2011 at 10:15 AM PST, Jupiter is 542,640,219 miles and increasing, as the Earth races on ahead of Jupiter.

How many earths would it take to get around Jupiter?

This question is normally worded "how many earth's would fit across the diameter of Jupiter?" The diameter of Jupiter is a little under 87,000 miles. Earth's diameter is a little under 8000 miles. 87,000/8000 = 10.9 (just about 11) earth diameters. Jupiter's circumference is 87,000(pi), or 273,000 miles. You could therefore fit 34 earths in a circle around Jupiter.

How long would it take to get to Jupiter in miles?

Jupiter is 390,674,710 miles from Earth. The time it would take to traverse this distance can only be determined if you provide the travel speed.

How many earth does it takes to stretch across Jupiter?

Jupiter has a surface area of 23.71 billion sq miles (61.42 billion km sq). Earth has a surface area of 200 million sq miles (510.072 million km sq). So to find the answer to your question we take Jupiter's surface area and divide it by Earth's surface area. 23.71 billion / 200 million = 118.55 So, it would take approximately 118.55 earths to stretch across the surface of Jupiter!

How large is Jupiter seen from Saturn?

From my calculations the distance from Saturn to Jupiter is nearly the same distance it is from Earth to Jupiter. Give or take 50 million miles or so the view of Jupiter from Saturn would be about the same as our view here is on Earth. Good question!!
