Bering Strait - it`s the Strait between the Arctic and Pacific Oceans, which separates Asia and North America (the most western point of continental - Cape Prince of Wales on the U.S. Alaska).

The smallest width is 86 km, the lower depths of fairway is 36 meter. The Strait connects the the Chuckchee Sea (Arctic Ocean) with the Bering Sea (Pacific Ocean). Named after the Russian explorer Vitus Bering (borned in Denmark), who went through this channel in 1728.

In the middle of the Bering Strait there are Diomede Islands: Island Ratmanova is the larger and located westerly and the island Krusenstern. According to the agreement on the sale of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands (1867), the border of Russia and the United States is in the middle between the islands. Thus, the island Ratmanova belongs to Russia, and the island of Krusenstern belongs to USA. The distance between the islands is a little more than 4 km. There's also the border of time zones and the International Date Line.

The closest point would be from Little Diomede Island in Alaska to Big Diomede Island in Russia which is 2.4 miles and halfway between the two is the maritime border and the International Date Line. That makes the distance between the two as 1.2 miles.

58 miles from the two closest points on each country's primary continents. However, the distance from some of the western-most Alaskan islands and Russian territory is as little as 3 miles.
