People have mixed results when using online dating sites. It really depends on a number of factors including the personality of the person using a site, how aggressive they are seeking out dates/partners, the type of person they are looking for and what specifically they are looking for in a relationship. Some people are able to hook up immediately with people they like, while others try for years to cyberdate successfully.

Another factor to consider is the site itself. Is it built to allow communication and engagement with others? Does it allow multiple pictures and expanded profiles? There are many niche dating sites out there that are very effective (i.e. emo dating sites, Christian dating sites).

To help understand the answer, we need to know the definition of effective. Are dating sites effective for meeting new people? Yes. Are they effective for setting up dates? Yes. Are they effective for finding your partner to marry? Depends completely on the user.

There isn't one percentage that shows the succes rate with online dating services. It depends on the point of view one has when investigating. The term "succes" is subjective. Some investigators consider succes rates based on the percentage of people that in the end get married. Others base it on the number of people that liked their date. Dating services itself are the main source of calculating the succes rate. Some magazines, newspapers, etc. have calculated the succes rates too. But if for example a magazine, that is against all forms of online activity, calculates the succes, the outcome will be different than when an internet magazine does the same.
