When you are born, the body takes stock of itself, things that are your make-up (hair, nails, skin, tissues, organs, etc.) are 'self', and the rest is 'not self'. When you get a cold or any other virus or bacteria or fungus your immune system attacks it because it is 'not self'.

The problem in Autoimmunity is that the body blurs the line between 'self' and 'not self' and starts attacking 'self' like a virus or something of the like.
