Water's high heat capacity stores energy, this allows water to moderate the earth's temperature.

Thanks to its chemical structure, water requires a relatively large amount of heat to raise its temperature, this also means that water cools relatively slowly. Earth's water balances the absorption and release of the sun's heat energy and moderates the global climate.

For example: a desert has very little water (on the ground or in the air); as a result it's very hot during the day when the sun is out and very cold at night. Other climates with moisture are less extreme.

The oceans are particularly important since they cover about 70% of the earth's surface. It keeps earth's temperatures fairly stable. Also, ocean currents move cold and warm waters around the globe, affecting the environment temperature and precipitation.

For example: the current that travels from the Caribbean to northern Europe causes areas like England to be more mild in winter than areas in Canada with similar latitudes. The water stays relatively warm even after traveling so far. (It also rains alot in that part of Europe.)

The specific heat capacity for liquid water is 4.186 joule/gram°C

heat

the high specific heat of water will effect the climate because it is able to store a large amount of heat, which means that there is less heat in the atmosphere. hence the weather is cooler.

Water's high specific heat contrasts with the relatively low specific heat of land, which has many implications with regards to weather and climate. For example, in the daytime land heats faster than the lakes, seas and oceans, and therefore the air over land rises causing low pressure which brings winds from the bodies of water, which has higher air pressure because the water isn't heating as quickly as the land.

It evens out the temperatures. By absorbing heat energy in the summer, and releases it during winter. The same also happens during summerdays and summernights, keeping the days cooler and the nights warmer.

In coastal regions, much of the suns heat is absorbed by water. The high specific capacity keeps the water from increasing temperature and keeps the air cool.
