As for the actual sensors, these days they are usually electronic but can still be Mercury/alcohol in glass (depending on the element being measured, with minimum thermometers usually containing alcohol as mercury can become semi-solid at low temperatures). The advantage of electronic sensors is that they can be read remotely, while mercury-in-glass units require the physical presence of an observer.
