"The Wizard of Oz" is the first of 14 books which serve as the first American Fairy Tales and as the royal histories of the beautiful, enchanted, magical lands and peoples of Oz.

Specifically, "The Wizard of Oz" was a success from its first publication, in 1900. It never went out of print. In the early decades of its success it was adapted to the stage and to the screen, in silent film and then in talking picture formats.

The first stage adaptation was the 1902/1903 versions as performed in Chicago and on Broadway, respectively. Silent film adaptations were made in 1908, 1910, 1914, and 1925. The talking picture version was released in 1939. The 1939 film version was re-released in 1949. That decision turned the movie venture into a profitable undertaking. In 1956, the 1939 film version saw its first of many appearances on television.

Also in 1956, the book went into the public domain, which served to increase its wild successes in its original format and in its adaptability to many printed and audio-visual formats worldwide. Two guiding forces that guarantee the book's lasting appeal to all ages, places and times are the Baum Family Trust, and the International Wizard of Oz Club.

An explanation of the author's intentions in writing the book is what the introduction is to "The Wizard of Oz."

Specifically, author and Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 - May 6, 1919) prefaces his children's story with an introductory page. He says that he seeks to write the first American fairy tale. He also states that he wants children to find delight in his story and not be left with nightmares.

Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 5, 1919] wrote both the book and stage versions of his creation, The Wizard of Oz. With some changes, the story is basically the same: Dorothy is carried by a cyclone, from Kansas to the magical world of Oz. In the process, however, she incurs the wrath of a powerful enemy ka the Wicked Witch of the West, for having killed her sister, the Wicked Witch of the East, upon whom her family's house landed. Dorothy just wants to get back to Kansas, where she had been bored before the cyclone. Within the enchanting world of Oz, she therefore travels to the Emerald City. For she has been told that Wizard of Oz is the go-to person for getting back home. On the way, she meets, and becomes fast friends with, the Tin Woodman, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion.
