Selective breeding happens within closely related species. useful Techniques

GM Food produces a wide range of characteristics that aren't possible with selective breeding. It can alter an organism's DNA with much greater precision-genes can also be transfered or manipulated

When you modify genetic material directly, rather than going through natural breeding, you
* have more direct control over what to change
* can mix genes from species that it wouldn't be possible to breed naturally

As an example, the GloFish (see related link) is a fluorescent small fish sold for aquariums. The fluorescence was created by taking a zebra fish and adding genetic material from jellyfish and coral. This would not be possible with selective breeding, as you can't mate a coral and a fish.

Genetic modification opens a whole new range of possibilities. Along with the associated risks.

Artificial selection is controlled totally from the outside and the selector is usually man. Men want certain attributes in organisms they domesticate and these attributes would not necessarily contribute to the organisms survival and reproduction if the organism was not protected by the artificial selector, man.
