Metformin is an anti-hyperglycemic. It is known as an insulin sensitizer in that it allows for glucose to be more sensitive to the insulin that a Type 2 diabetic makes allowing for more glucose to be taken in and used by the cell.

Meformin also decreases the amount of glucose made by the liver as well as decreases the absorption of glucose in the small intestine.
