Since the Earth is spherical, at any given time the sun will appear in different parts of the sky from different locations, and for half of the planet, it will be night. So, when it is morning on one side of the world, it is evening on the other. Before the invention of clocks, we approximated time by the position of the sun. Later, when clocks were common, each town set its own time. This worked relatively well until trains became a common form of transportation. Since each town followed its own time setting, train schedules were very confusing and disorganized, so we created a standard set of time zones to make coordinate the trains. Time zones have become even more essential since airplanes and telecommunications have emerged.

There can be a uniform and unambiguous clock setting throughout a given time zone, and a reasonably uncomplicated way of establishing the time anywhere in the world, given knowledge of a zone's variance from universal time.

What is Reason for Time zones?

Time zones simply create a workable 'day' and 'night'. If countries didn't use time zones (and the whole planet worked on the same time), people would be going to bed at (for example) 9am just because it was dark then. Time zones bring sensibility to daily life. The only disadvantage - is having to adjust to different times when you travel overseas. For example - it might be 8am when you depart, but (after travelling through a number of time zones) - it might only be 2am local time.

Are the zones strictly by longitude?

You don't specify what type of zones you're talking about, but from the context "time zones" seems likely. In that case, the answer is no. Zone boundaries are ROUGHLY based on longitude, but political factors enter the equation as well (it should be obvious that having parts of the same city in different time zones would be awkward).
