Since coming across similar articles online, I emailed Immersive Media, to find out
if this is true.
According to Google Maps's Behind the Scenes website, there are Google Maps cars that drive around with cameras and other equipment mounted on them. These cars constantly take pictures of where they drive. These pictures are what you see on Google's street view. Google has been mapping street view in the United States since 2007, and has even started doing street view in other countries.
Street view photos are taken by Google-enabled cars and vans that drive through the pubic streets.
When Google updates it street view photos in its image database then these updates are made available to Google Maps and Google Earth.
Google Earth and Google Maps show the most current Street View photos available in a given area whether they're 2011 or 2010.There is an option to show 'historical imagery' for Street View photos in Google Maps by checking the clock icon under the address but not yet in Google Earth. In Google Earth, you can enable 'historical imagery' under View menu and choose to see the satellite imagery for previous years.
They use satellites for the broader view. For street view they have a van that goes around with a camera to take the photos.
Google Street View is a technology featured in Google Maps and Google Earth launched in 2007.
Google Maps from the web browser and Google Earth from the desktop can view Street View. you can also view traffic.

You can, but it is a rather new functionality added to Google Maps / Google Earth, and at the moment, the street view is only available for major avenues and roads.
The orange "pegman" icon in classic Google Maps is the tool to activate Street View mode in Google Maps. Normally you drag the orange "pegman" icon onto the map to activate street view mode at that location. The new Google Maps interface is redesigning the street view user interface.
It would be useful to use Google Maps Street view when you are looking for an address and directions on how to get to that address. Looking at a street view will give you a better idea of the location of the address in question.
To compile Google Earth street view photos, Google send out vans with panoramic cameras. Because it was and is an huge task, some images are not up to date, but it is an ongoing process.
Google Maps has Street View imagery and Bing Maps has Streetside eye-level view, both of which capture imagery from street level. You can also download Google Earth from Google's website for advanced features including Street View.
There is currently on Street View for Google Earth app on Android or iOS mobile devices but you can get Street View using the appropriate Maps app on viewing Google Maps via the device's web browser.
