in a floppy drive, a small pin hits the area where that little switch is on the floppy. if it passes through, the floppy drive detects the floppy as write/read. it it doesn't pass through, the floppy drive detects the floppy as read only

5.25 Floppy Disk Drive will not work on newer PC?
Open the case and see if the power AND the ribbon cable are both plugged in. If the drive's read light is staying on constantly the cable is connected backward. Also, make sure the floppy is properly set-up in the BIOS.
