Voltage is the pressure that pushes current through the resistance of the conductor.

Ohm's Law: E=IR can be rewritten as I=E/R to explain this. "I" is the intensity measured in amps, "E" is the electromotive force measured in volts, and R is the resistance measured in ohms. Voltage divided by the resistance equals the amperage. The voltage pushes valence electrons out of orbit from one atom into the next atom.
