Using electricity to generate light also generates heat. Incandescent light bulbs work by heating a thin wire filament so hot that it also generate light. We want the light but the heat is wasted.

Fluorescent light bulbs also use heat, but only at the beginning to heat a filament. Once the inside of the bulb heats up, electricity is able to travel through a gas in the tube creating light using a method called ionization, then the hot filament is no longer needed and shuts down. The fluorescent light generates very little heat. But ionized gas acts light a short circuit that lets too much electric current go through the bulb and wires and causes heat problems. To avoid this, a ballast is used in the lamp that acts to limit the amount of current but also gets hot. So, we save on the bulb but lose heat energy in the ballast. We still have something that gives more light and less heat for the amount of electricity used. More modern ballasts use electronics to make it more efficient. All this is true for the older long fluorescent bulbs and the modern smaller twirly bulbs.

Also, these bulbs generate ultraviolet light which we can't see. The inside of the bulb is coated with a material that when exposed to ultraviolet light will fluoresce (glow) the white light we use. Different coatings on the inside of the bulb will fluoresce with different degrees of whiteness giving us the choices such as warm white and cool white.

Newer more efficient bulbs using LED (Light Emitting Diodes) technology are even more efficient. A diode is an electronic component that allows electricity to only travel through it in one direction and blocking electricity in the reverse direction. Historically, its main use was to convert AC (alternating current) to DC (direct current). AC electricity is the electricity we get from the electric company into our home power outlets. DC is the electricity we get from batteries and is needed to operate modern electronic devices.

Modern electronic semiconductor diodes have a side effect of lighting up when more electricity is coming in the reverse direction then it is capable of handling. It will light up for a short while, burn, and die. The new LED bulbs use diodes optimized to produce more light and create little heat. Additional circuitry (that generates some heat) is used to limit the amount of electric current to prevent it from burning out so that it can last a long time. As of now, these are the most efficient light bulbs publically available

The term EFFICIENCY is defined as useful work, divided by total energy expenditure.

The percentage of energy from a fuel that is actually used to perform work is its?

What is the ratio of the energy a machine delivers to the energy supplied to it?

efficiencyThe ratio of useful energy to total input energy is called efficiency. It refers to the percentage of the work input that is converted to work output.

What kind of LED lighting lamps used in the workshop?

Factory floor lighting choice is directly related to light intensity work environment, but also directly affect the work efficiency, so that the choice is very essential . Modern people are paying more attention to energy saving, low-carbon, so explain the advantages of LED lamps out where! LED lighting is the most promising prospects. We usually say customary factory floor lamp lighting for factory or mining lamps, lighting by rational design and selection of appropriate lighting can not only play a role in energy conservation, and can greatly improve the efficiency and comfort of workers .

Percentage of energy that is used by a device to work?

What does efficiency have to do with work and work out?

Efficiency = (Useful Work done)/(Total Work done). This is usually expressed as a percentage.Example:For every 200KJ of energy released from coal in a power plant, only 60KJ is converted to electrical energy. Therefore, Efficiency = 60/200 =30%.

How is the efficiency of a compound machine calculated?

The efficiency of a machine is found by dividing the amount of work done by a machine by the amount of energy used by a machine. The answer is then multiplied by 100 to give a percentage.

How do you calculate efficiency and how is it expressed?

For efficiency, you have to consider the energy or work that you get out of the machine, compared to the energy or work that you put into the machine. Its what you get out, divided by what you put in. By multiplying the result by 100, you should then get the efficiency expressed as a percentage, which is the normal way of describe how efficient a machine or process is. efficiency = (Work out/Work in) x 100 Sometimes you are given the efficiency in a problem, but then have to calculate either the work out or work in, so then its just a case of rearranging the equation above.

Can you get more energy out of fuels if you increase the percentage of energy used for work?

The percentage of energy converted into useful work is called the EFFICIENCY.
