There are 3 phases in wound healing
I. Inflammatory phase
The inflammatory phase takes place immediately after the wound is inflicted.
In the inflammatory phase (lag phase/resting phase), clotting takes place in order to obtain hemostasis, or stop blood loss, and various factors are released to attract cells that phagocytise debris, bacteria, and damaged tissue and release factors that initiate the proliferative phase of wound healing.
Platelets, PMNs, Macrophages are all involved in this phase.
II. Proliferation phase
Takes about 2 days to 3 weeks
A) Granulation
B) Contraction
C) Epithelialization
III. Remodelling phase
Takes 3 weeks to 2 years
A) New collagen forms which increases tensile strength to wounds
B) Scar tissue is only 80 percent as strong as original tissue
