Hester does not punish her daughter, Pearl, in "The Scarlet Letter." Instead, she tries to provide her with love and guidance, despite the challenges they face due to Hester's public shaming and their social isolation. Pearl serves as a reminder of Hester's sin, but Hester does not intentionally punish her.
Hester actually wears the Scarlet Letter from the day she is put on the scaffold until she possibly goes to Europe and takes it off, then she comes back alone and returns to her old house and puts the letter back on, in its place on her bosom Hester is supposed to wear the scarlet letter for the rest of her life. She does take it off for a brief moment in the forest when she meets Reverend Dimmesdale. Then she takes it off when she goes to Europe to start a new life. However, she feels she must punish herself for her crime so she goes back to Boston and re-wears the scarlet letter.
The townspeople of Boston have gathered to witness Hester Prynne's public shaming, as she stands in the town square with her newborn child, branded with a scarlet letter "A" for adultery. It is a spectacle meant to publicly shame and punish her for her transgression.
In the Scarlet Letter, Hester was forced to wear the red letter A indicating "adultery" (which in the strictly religious community was a sin and therefore nominally a crime). She secretly slept with the preacher in the town, and became pregnant, and because no unmarried man came forward, they correctly assumed a married one was involved. The town believed her punishment should be to wear the letter A as a sign of her sin, which made her an outcast in a society that prided itself on conformity.Adultery.
Roger Chillingworth visits Hester Prynne to exact revenge on her for her infidelity. He is her estranged husband, and is consumed by jealousy and anger over Hester's relationship with another man, Arthur Dimmesdale. Chillingworth's visit serves as a way for him to further torment and punish Hester for her actions.
Governor Bellingham and Reverend Wilson want Hester Prynne to reveal the identity of the father of her child. They seek to shame and punish her for her sin of adultery by enforcing the strict moral codes of Puritan society.
punish 'em
Roger Chillingworth's knowledge of the baby's father is crucial because it gives him a target for his revenge, as he is determined to punish the guilty party. It also fuels his obsession and provides him with a sense of power and control over the situation. Ultimately, Chillingworth's desire to know the truth about the baby's father drives much of the plot in "The Scarlet Letter."
