Home Depot 50lb bags are $3.48 for the morton salt solar kiln dried at least in seattle Look for 99.8% pure Sodium Chloride (NaCl) without Iodine or the Anti-Caking additive, Yellow Prussiate of Soda (YPS). Iodine and YPS can cause a localized tint to the water or yellow staining on the cementitious finish if allowed to rest undissolved on the finish for extended periods of time. AutoSoft Plus™ is blended with the proper amount of stabilizer to maintain a proper level within the recommended range when added according to the salt chart on the box. Granular Salt, Table Salt, Solar Salt or Water Conditioner Pellets can also be used but will have different dissolve rates. If the salt you use contains Iodine or YPS, constant brushing will help the dissolve rate and prevent staining due to the additives in

the salt. Ensure that the salt you use contain a minimum purity of 99% Sodium Chloride (NaCl).

NOTE: Do not use Rock Salt due to its high levels of impurities.

Up to now the salt used in pools was sodium chloride. However there is a new system just on the market that uses Magnesium and Potassium chloride this stuff is good for your health and the back wash is actually good for the garden.

You should use Sodium Chloride Salt that is greater than 99% pure. It is common food quality salt or water softener salt and usually available in 40-80lb bags. You can also use water softener pellets but we find that they take a while longer to dissolve. Most important Do Not use rock salt, salt with yellow prussiat of soda or with caking additives or iodized salt. Also be careful when adding salt to the pool as you don't want to over do it as you will have to dilute or add water to the pool bring the chlorine levels down which can be a hassle if you are a well user. I presume you have a salt water chlorinator. if you don't then you don't need it regardles off what anyone tells you.

if you do have a salt water chlorinator then all you do is throw the whole bag in the pool as most salt bags will allow the salt to dissolve through the bag. and that's it nice and easy.

I got mine yesterday at Wal-Mart. It is Morton's Pool Salt. It cost less than $6 a bag and the bag was 40 pounds. I heard you can get it at Home Depot and Lowe's also. I have a pool that is from Wal-Mart and I think it will take 4 bags of salt for the whole year.

Can you use water softener salt for a pool salt system?

There are two types of salt based pool chlorinators. More expensive and less common are those with a separate salt tank and these will normally use tablet salt for water softeners. The more common type is where salt is added to the swimming pool itself. In the UK we most commonly use PDV salt - that is Pure Dried Vacuum Salt or table salt. Granular salt for water softeners can be used. Tablet salt for water softeners should be avoided unless you have a white liner, because the tablets may bleach spots on the pool liner before dissolving. Julian Hobday of KindWater.

What is a saltwater swimming pool?

A salt water swimming pool is a pool that has had salt added to it in order to be able to use the salt in water that is circulated through the filtration system and run it through a chlorinator.
