URI is an acronym for U niversal R esource I dentifier. It is a standard for identifying a resource (site, name, application, etc.) across a computer network (the biggest… example being the Internet!) A fully qualified Internet URI must include a protocol (e.g. HTTP), a server (e.g. wiki), a domain name (e.g. answers) and it's position within the DNS structure (e.g. com) hence - http://wiki.answers.com/ This instructs the browser application to use the http protocol suite to communicate with the wiki server which is found in the answers domain of the .com portion of the DNS structure. . URL - Abbreviation of Uniform Resource Locator, the global address of documents and other resources on the World Wide Web. . The first part of the address is called a protocol identifier and it indicates what protocol to use, and the second part is called a resource name and it specifies the IP address or the domain name where the resource is located. The protocol identifier and the resource name are separated by a colon and two forward slashes. . Uniform Resource Locator; an address that specifies the location of a file on the Internet (e.g., http://wiki.answers.com%29 . Another example for URL or unifor resource locator is: . http://www.avnoy.com/alarm/flash.swf

A URL, or Universal Resource Locator (also known as a URI, a Uniform Resource Identifier) is a string of characters which is used to identify or name a resource, the main purp…ose being to enable interaction with a representation of the resource, typically the World Wide Web. Answer Universal Resource Locator
Unique Resource Location or the Address of webpages/websites or images on the web Earle:)
URL strings consist of three parts ( substrings ): 1. network protocol 2. host name or address 3. file or resource location . These substrings are separated by special c…haracters as follows: protocol :// host / location. URL Protocol The 'protocol' substring defines a network protocol to be used to access a resource. These strings are short names followed by the three characters '://' (a simple naming convention to denote a protocol definition). Typical URL protocols include http:// , ftp:// , and mailto:// . URL Host The 'host' substring identifies a computer or other network device. Hosts come from standard Internet databases such as DNS and can be names or IP addresses. For example, compnetworking.about.com is the host for this Web page. URL Location The 'location' substring contains a path to one specific network resource on the host. Resources are normally located in a host directory or folder. For example, /od/internetaccessbestuses/bldef-url.htm is the location of this Web page including two subdirectories and the file name. When the location element is omitted such as in http://compnetworking.about.com/ , the URL conventionally points to the root directory of the host and often a home page (like 'index.htm').

It is a Uniform Resource Locator. It is the address of something you want to access on the internet and it helps you find it. It takes account of the name of the place it is l…ooking for and the protocol used to get it. It is usually, but not always, a web address.. It tells the computer what website you want to go to. . A URL is the link in the address bar. It takes you to the website you wanna go to. For example http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_can_a_url_do&action=edit That's the URL link to edit this question. So whenever you type in a website your typing in the URL.

You can't "unblock" it. You'd have to go around it with a proxy server... but doing so puts you at risk of viruses, having your passwords stolen, etc.
