It depends on what type of distractions you mean. If the distractions are small children than it has been my experience to wait until they are in bed and asleep to study. If the distractions are roommates and then you might want to explain to them that you have to study and shut your bedroom door. What has always helped me is to study in the library at school even just for an hour at a time a few days before the exam and crash an hour the night before. Index cards/flash cards helped me and taking good notes helped me. As the author of this question, I will preserve this as an example of a joke taken too seriously. The original question was "If you are 20 years old and your 12 year-old possibly sociopathic brother chases after your 3 year-old dog with a chainsaw what is the best way to study for third-year biochemistry mid-term exams?" The question was also solely under the Nonsense Questions FAQ (as all joke questions should be) until not one, but two people changed the topic I chose to the one they thought would best answer it were it a serious question: Education. Not only that, one of those people decided to change my question entirely, completely destroying the message I intended to give. (I later learned that serious questions are commonly put in the Nonsense Questions FAQ as a last resort, and this person was a superviser who had seen many instances of that.) I did this as a satire of the immense glut of questions that exist asking "What if your (age between 11 and 19)-year old (daughter/son/girlfriend/boyfriend/brother/sister/friend) is (sociopathic/a pathological liar)?" There are just way too many of these and making the person's age different doesn't really change the answer. Also, the original questions focusing solely on sociopaths and pathological liars enjoy a huge popularity rating and are a much better resource, although it would probably be a better idea to take the question to professionals in the first place. I had done something similar with the question "Is 31254pi a good IQ for a 476 gatch-old male Daskor living in the Triangulum Galaxy?", though I suppose the made-up words made it easier for people to tell it was a joke. It's not a real question. Please don't take it seriously. Props go to Zilly for his original answer, "Use the chain saw to chop your brothers head off!" -Syckls (and if you don't believe me, look in the question history)

  1. Set a time for studying, and treat it like a job or another class you need to take. Don't skive off or slack off or find excuses to skip the work.
  2. Have everything you will need for studying. If you constantly have to stop to find paper or a pencil or a dictionary or your textbook, that will really distract you!
  3. Turn off the TV and phone. Ditto internet chats, IMs, and other distractions.
  4. If you can concentrate better with music in the background, be sure that it is soft music, not blasting out of the machine so loud that it distracts you from the work.
  5. Read over your work. Make sure that you understand all of the terms; look up definitions if you need to, and write them in your notes for later. Make sure that you know what you are supposed to be learning in this session.
  6. If you find yourself thinking about other things instead of the work, tell yourself "Stop - I will think about that later!" and focus back on your studying.
  7. After you have done the work, review it to be sure that you understand everything, and check any problems to be sure they are correct. This is the part where it is nice to have a parent or another hard-working student to help you out.
  8. Give yourself some kudos for working hard. Most people take it for granted that you have to study - it helps you feel better about yourself if you recognize when you have been working hard, and pat yourself on the back for it!

Further Answers:

  • make sure your electronic devices are turned off (iPod, cellphone, laptop, etc)
  • clean your study environment (throw away trash, magazines, makeup, etc)
  • study in a quiet, peaceful environment (far away from tv, family, friends, etc)
  • If you are tired you can have difficulty concentrating on your study; boredom can be caused by tiredness, so that something you might otherwise find interesting becomes dull.
  • Be sure to get sufficient rest. If you have trouble sleeping, look into simple ways to help this; consult a doctor if you feel it necessary.
  • You might find that simply taking a short break to catnap, daydream, or to walk around a little is all you need to refresh yourself. It doesn't sound like much, but it does work.
  • Constantly pushing yourself to keep studying when your brain needs a break doesn't work!
  • Try not to miss meals and do try to eat good foods. Fruit is always a good snack when you are studying. Don't overdo coffee in trying to stay more alert, and don't overdo alcohol in trying to relax - coffee and alcohol are bad friends when you have work to do!
  • Get off the internet! But seriously, put yourself in a room/space without distractions like tv/people. Make sure you have all you need...all the books, highlighters, drinks, etc. so you don't have to get up. Put some headphones in and some music you can listen to without being distracted...so you can't hear what's going on around you!

you should lay/sit in the garden (if yhu have one) and dont let anyone else out and just sit peacefully and study

Here are some good ideas to prevent distraction:

  • Turn off the cellphones, Video Games, TV, iPad, and internet - yes, I said internet. Just having a connection in the background while you're typing will distract you.
  • Turn down the noise - either find a quiet spot to study or try wearing earplugs.
  • Play soft music - in order to work, the music must be soft and instrumental. Any words, heavy rhythms, or loudness will just distract you more.
  • Have all the things you need with you before you start studying, so you won't be distracted hunting for something.
  • Tell your friends and family you're working and not to disturb you.

Remember to treat your studying just like a job - you may not want to do it, but you're going to be "paid" with good grades and a better job in the future, so just sit down and get it over with!

Easy - study someplace without distractions. Study away from the computer, your cell phone, the TV, the radio, your favorite book, and anyone who is likely to talk to you or cause a distraction. Only listen to music if it helps you focus & improves your performance. Set a timer for, say, 20 minutes, & tell yourself, "Let's see how much homework I can get done before the timer goes off." Take a 15-minute break every 45-60 minutes, so you won't get tired (and distracted).

get support from the people around you. Maybe try creating a revision timetable that's not too challenging and you know you can cope with. If you're a person that needs motivation planning to have a party after your exams or going to the cinema with your friends after you've revised might help. Some people find it helpful to draw 2 picture one of what you hope will happen if you pass the exam and one of what will happen if you fail and stick them up somewhere you look/go when you start to get distracted. You just have to think about you and what keeps you focused.

Here are some suggestions:

  1. Buy earplugs and use them
  2. Go somewhere quiet
  3. Play soft music on your headphones - not loud and not rock and not with words - all of those are too distracting according to scientific study - soft instrumental music helps you concentrate
  4. Learn to focus on what you're doing and ignore distractions

Studying in a noisy environment can be very distracting, counterproductive and utterly frustrating. However, if you are unable to get away from the noise, I have some tips to help you study through all the noise! If you have access to ear plugs or headphones, use them. Play classical or soft music in the background, that can help minimize the noise. If the above items are not available and you are unable to relocate to a more quieter area then focus on ONE thing at a time. Noise can be very distracting so it is important to just focus on one area of study only. When studying read aloud, listening to your own voice may help drown out the other external noises. Another way to filter out the sounds, is to rewrite your notes. As you are focusing on rewriting and rereading the notes, you will hopefully be able to filter out the other sounds. Another great study tip would be to take frequent breaks while you are studying. Try to study for 20 minutes then take a 5 minute break. This will help increase your memory retention especially through all the noise. Good luck!

You can postpone the time that you have chosen to study, or you can purchase ear plugs. Well-made plugs really can abate noise.
