You should use a taper. You can probably find these at a piercing studio. It is important to first stretch it to a 16 gauge, and then to a 14 gauge about a month later to prevent tearing.

Can you stretch your 5 month industrial piercing to a 14 gauge from a 16?

No. Let's understand the body before we go doing anything. Cartilage is not an elastic tissue like skin, it is a frame work that holds the tissue in place but doesn't stretch, it tears. You can not taper a 16g cartilage piercing to 14g without doing damage to the cartilage and the piercing. Regardless of what some folks will say, cartilage doesn't stretch like regular ear lobes do, so if you want a higher gauge you need to consider repiercing. You may be able to get a 14 into a 16 hole but it will be very sore and very painful in the long run, hardly worth the pain and effort.

It depends on where your piercing is, but usually you will get between a 14-18 gauge. (Smaller gauge = bigger hole)

What is the standard gauge for a cartilage piercing?

14's are pretty much standard for all piercings, but I would recommend a dermal punch with actually removes the tissue reducing other risks. If you plan on stretching punch it at the gauge you want to stretch to if not then you can have them punch it in any gauge you like. Never use anything below a 14 for migration and rejection reasons. I wouldn't really recommend a 14 either, but it is your choice.

If you pierce your lip at home and you only have an 18 gauge does it hurt to gauge your lip into a 14 gauge?

Um, yes. Anytime you stretch a piercing it will hurt. Wait until it heals fully. Or, you can buy hollow needles, the kind used to tag cattle..(they are sterile) which is better. You shouldn't even do it yourself it could become infected.

Can you use nipple bars as tongue bars?

Yes, as long as the gauge is correct for the tongue piercing - for example : nipple bar is 14 gauge - usual tongue piercing jewellery is 14 gauge and the length of the nipple bar is the correct length for the wearers tongue (this varies from person to person). Basically - if it fits - wear it!
