AnswerGosh! Big answer, but I'll give you the outline. I assume this is an old Barco-type 3 CRT projector with three lenses and tubes - one red, one green and one blue. If not, I'm not sure why the question is being asked.

Disclaimer: This is a tricky procedure that should ONLY be attempted by someone who has been trained to do this. You try this AT YOUR OWN RISK - both to the EQUIPMENT and to YOURSELF and others around you!

In outline, switch of red and blue (you will find gun switches on the control panel along with the other dozens of contrrols!)

Switch on the grid (there will be a "grid picture" generator built-in) then use first the static then the dynamic controls to get the grid as square and even as possible on the screen.

Next, add the red tube (gun). Using the static position controls first, get the centre of the grid to line up, then thebrest of the static controls to aligh the rest as best you can. Next use the synamic controls to adjust the linearity top, bottom, left right etc - and finally use the corner controls to get those aligned as well.

Turn off red, turn on blue (make sure the room is totally dark - seeing the blue alignment is always a problem). Do the same for the blue.

If you absolutely can't get the alignment right (and remember it changes with picture size and distance from the screen - so don't move it once you're done!) on some older projectors, there are "move the whole picure" controls on the necks of the tubes themselves. BE CAREFUL - you're playing with around 28,000 volts around there!

Hitachi Convergence Added

If the convergence is slightly off try running the manual convergence instead of using magic foucus.

1) Turn the TV on

2) Press Magic Focus to begin magic focus

3) Press magic focus again during the magic focus process to get the "stop" screen

4) While stop screen is up, press STATUS or INFO on the remote control (R/C) to bring you to DCAM mode and

the service grid

5) When you first get in here? I believe red is the selected color by default (it is flashing).

6) To choose other colors to converge, use the following buttons on the R/C:

a) "STATUS" - Green

b) "0" - Red

c) "ANT" - Blue

7) Start from the center of the screen and work your way out on one color at a time. I adjusted red across the

whole screen to match green. Then I switched to blue, and adjusted that to green as well. After you adjust blue, you

may want to go back and adjust some red again? etc. until the convergence looks good.

(a) Use 4, 6, 2, and 5 on the R/C to move the cursor position(dotted lines).

(b) Use thumb stick to move the convergence point color.

This will depend on your specific brand and model. Most models will allow you to pull up the convergene menu by using the original remote. Once is displayed on the screen you can try to fix it. Note: I you are not able to move one or more colors in any direction your convergece chips have failed .

Sounds more like the convergence amplifiers have burned out. But on Sony's, they had an auto-convergence system in most of 'em, so try it. If it doesn't work, then I'd think you may hove more serious issues, like the convergence amps. Without seeing it, there's little further advice to offer.

If it's not a LCD/DLP or plasma set (you didn't specify) it's probably because the green CRT is getting weak and can't maintain focus or your convergence amplifiers have taken a turn for the worse.

Rear-projection technology allows for large displays; rear-projection televisions range from 42" to 80" on the diagonal.
