no possible way. You would have to request to be a friend or either confirm their friend request... i hope that answers your question.
When you first log on to facebook it takes you to your home page. Then in the top right hand corner it says all the requests. You'll see it.

Im guessing that if you go to someone's profile and see them as one of your friends they are supposed to be a mutual friend
