How do you sage your home?

A sage ceremony is great cleansing ritual and fairly simple to perform. You can purchase sage wands at your local or online occult supply stores and are fairly inexpensive. Light the end of a wand until it begins to smoke. Then walk the area of each room of your home starting and ending at the same point (doorway, etc.) in the manner similar to a church elder censing his altar. You may also want to check out your local book store for a ritual suited to your religious preferences as to how to prepare or how to pray during the ritual to fine tune it to your needs.

I think that once the sage has been lit you have to walk from room to room demanding all spirits to leave. Every room has to be done and some think you need to open windows to let the spirits out . Then the outside of the property must been done also, all four corners, ect, if you live on a square lot.

Using sage as a blessing for your home can be done in one of two ways.

Before you start make sure you are using white sage, this is not the culinary sage you buy at the grocery store, it comes in small bundles of whole leaves wrapped and tied with string (jute, cotton, etc) of various colours (the colours do not matter). This is a smudge bundle and you will be lighting it and fanning the smoke around the house.

As a general blessing I suggest you do a "cleansing" first.

- The first, takes two parts, a physical cleaning and a spiritual cleaning.

Once the house is physically clean you can asperge it using a bundle of leaves (sage leaves work well for this too, but you will need a second bundle to burn) dipped in salt water.

As you walk around the house (counterclockwise for cleansing) start at either the top or bottom of the house, open all the windows you can. Enter each and every room, closet, cupboard, crawl space, etc. and sprinkle your asperging water along each wall and into each corner. (remember to move counterclockwise)

As you do say something like, "With my hand, and by my will, I banish all negativity." When you have finished you have gotten rid or everything bad.

- Now for the second part. Once again start at the top or bottom of the house, light a white candle and set it in the center of the room (you may want someone else help you by standing in the middle of the room holding the candle). Light the smudge bundle from the candle and let it burn for a bit, then put out the flames and allow the the bundle to smolder (relight as needed).

This time working clockwise around each room, closet, cupboard, crawlspace, etc. fanning the smoke from the sage bundle. You can use your hand, a feather or a fan to move the smoke.

While doing this say something like, "With my hand, and by my will, I bless this space, and all who dwell within, let nothing un-welcomed enter here."

As you finish each room, close what windows you have opened and move the candle to the next room, and repeat the smudging. For small areas such as closets and cupboards and crawl spaces make sure to shine light from the candle into all the dark corners and fan smoke in as well.

The less elaborate method, used when a home belongs to a practitioner and has working wards etc. is to take the smudge bundle to the "heart of the house", light the bundle, ask blessings of your patron gods, and allow the bundle to smolder while visualising the white light of blessings filling and surrounding your home.

Even lifelong practitioners do a full cleansing and blessing once a year, and each and every time they move residence.
