To replace an auger on a MTD snow thrower, first unplug the spark plug wire fro the spark plug and clear all debris from the auger. Second, remove the auger belt covers and remove the drive pulley. Third, take out the small key that is now visible in the groove. Finally, loosen and remove the bolts to replace the auger.

∙ 13y agoEasy. There are bolts that go into each end of the axles. The 2 outside ones need to be taken completely out. Also, the 2 smaller ones that fasten into the bottom of the side plate need to be removed. Take off the plate. This will allow enough slack to pull the rear track drive wheel off the axle. You may have to pull off the front wheel too, but usually it can stay on the axle about half way out. Wiggle the track off the wheels and after cleaning everything up and greasing the assembly, put the new/replacement track on and, while pulling hard to the rear, get the rear drive wheel back onto it's axle. Remount the plate and adjust the track tension so there is about 1/2" slack in the center when it's pulled up.

There are Two, sometimes THREE Belts on an MTD Snow Blower. They are NOT Easy To Change unless your experienced.. Belts cost around 12.00 EACH, and can takes a few hours to change.. Sometimes it is NOT the Belt, but an Adjustment in the Cable or a spring) This is for the drive belt, not the auger belt Check drive belt every 50 hours of operation for wear and tear. Drain the gasoline from the snow thrower, or place a piece of plastic under the gas cap. Remove the plastic belt cover on the front of the engine by removing the two self-tapping screws. * Tip the snow thrower up and forward, so that it rests on the housing. • Remove six self-tapping screws from frame cover underneath the snow thrower. • Pull the idler pulley away from the drive belt and remove the belt from the engine pulley. You will find the idler pulley in front of the engine and under the belt cover that you removed earlier. See Figure 31. • Working from the underside of the frame, slip belt between the friction wheel and the friction wheel disc. See Figure 34. You may have to twist the belt flat in order to slide it through the clearance between the friction wheel and the friction wheel disc. Remove the belt. • Install new belt. Reassemble following the instructions in reverse order. This is a pretty straight forward effort, for any most non-comitose DIY'er. Answer I've owned an MTD Blower,for about 12 years. the toughest belt change is the double auger drive belts. Springs need to be removed. the right wheel must be removed, when facing the open bottom, and the friction wheel assembly must be removed to allow access to the large auger drive pulleys. One must remember to not place the bottom belt onto the engine pulley until the top belt has been installed. It's pretty obvious, when you look at it and/or make the mistake one time.

It is my understanding that originally Aircap units were built by a division of Sunbeam. Sunbeam was bought out by Aircap, who in turn, was purchased by MTD (Modern Tool & Die). It is also my understanding that Sears carries parts for some of those units. Your model and serial number will probably be necessary. I have worked for a week to find out who built my "The Snow Thrower" only to run across this info this evening. A call to a dealer who has been around for a while may help you. MTD also has a customer support line.
