I would use Fray-Chek on both edges of the slit to keep them from raveling. Then iron fusible webbing to the right side of a leftover piece of the backing fabric, and cut a patch that is 1/8"-1/4" bigger on all sides than the slit. Now, poke the patch through the slit and slide it around until it is evenly positioned under the slit. Using a damp press cloth, iron the area to fuse your patch to the quilt back (Follow the instructions for the fusible web). That should be relatively invisible.

Begin sewing a little before the torn seam and end a little bit after it. You could also try double sided tape.

What is a seam ripper used for?

A seam ripper is used to take seams out of materials. Like say for example I wanted to make a quilt out of several different materials, so i would sue a seam ripper to take apart them materials to make the quilt. A seam ripper is used to cut the threads that hold the pieces of fabric together. You use a seam-ripper to remove stitches in a fabric without tearing the fabric, instead of scissors or something else. Generally you use a seam ripper and hook it into the stitch at the seam, in order to be able to go back and re-sew the area without damaging the material. :D
