How do you remove laminate flooring that was put down and glued to the floor?

Depending on the sub-flooring and the quality of the linoleum the job will be easy or a "Bear." It really isn't the floor covering that is difficult it is the adhesive used. the linoleum should come off relatively with little effort it is the adhesive that is tough.
Depending on your situation and the condition of the floor structure, consider using a razor to remove small areas that are bubbled or curling, then fill in those areas to level and then consider adding another layer of 1/4 inch plywood to supply a new base for your replacement flooring.
If the addition of a new underlayment is not an option, scraping the existing adhesive is possible (please wear a mask.) Good Luck.

∙ 15y agoUse a shovel if the glue is agreeable. 2.Pull it up - throw it out. NO? A little heating from a propane torch is helpful. That stuff is basically tar. It can catch fire, Be careful and prepared for fire. Another technique is to score the lino with a knife in 1' x 3' sections. Use a heat gun to warm the glue underneath and then a hammer and a heavy duty scraper (not a paint scraper.) Slide the scraper into the divet from the knife and angle it to start to peel up the sides of the cut sqare. Use the hammer to tap the scraper through the cut section. This takes some time, but that way it will usually leave your sub floor in tack. Also, you do not have to remove it depending on what you want to do with it. You can lay sub floor over it or trim any edges that are curling, flash it with leveler and then put new lino on top of it.

∙ 12y agoThis can depend not only on the type of glue that was used, but also the age of the glue (since some glues will dry out and get weaker with time) but chances are, you can pry the linoleum off with a crowbar or wrecking bar. If the attachment is too powerful to allow that, it could become a tough job, but in principle it is also possible to sand it off (with a power sander, of course; otherwise it is an impossibly difficult job). It could be very convenient to dissolve the glue with the right solvent, but the linoleum makes it very hard for the solvent to reach the glue, so that may not be possible.

∙ 10y agoMost likely, if the floor was glued, it was glued with an industrial product such as PL Premium. Many laminate floors are installed as 'floating' floors which does not require glue.
Unfortunately if it is difficult to pull up the laminate you may need to remove the sub floor in order to ensure a flat surface to work with when installing the new floor. If the laminate flooring does pull up and leaves indentations and low spots, simply skim coat the floor with a floor leveler product before installing the final floor.

There are products available such as luxury vinyl tiles that come in wood designs that can be glued directly to the floor.
