There are a lot of different ways to relieve the pain, it just depends on how bad it is,

and how much it's affecting your life. For me, it was a Quality of Life decision in how my pain has been treated over the years.

I found out prior to my 3rd spinal operation just over 2 years ago that my first 2 were botched, and was the reason for my extreme chronic pain. As it turned out, 2 of the 8 screws in my lower spine were inserted too far through the bone and into leg nerves in the lower back - one for each leg. The surgeon told me that when they did a nerve conduction test to be sure my leg reacted so violently the surgical team jumped out of the way. I have another screw in a disk in my neck that still needs to be removed also.

Since the screws have been removed from the nerves, I have noticed a drop in the pain, but realistically I know that they were there for 8 years, and that isn't going to heal anytime soon. You can read my Supervisor Bio to find out more about what I've been through, but I've been on the strongest opiates for the past 11 years now, and that's the only thing that has helped with the pain. I've been able to reduce my dosages some since the screws were removed, but as I said it will take time heal, assuming that they ever fully will heal.

Pain Management and Opiate Therapy is a Quality of Life decision. For me, I had really no choice - I'd be either dead or in a nuthouse if it weren't for opiates a long time ago. It's more inconvenient than anything else, and I've learned to live with that. In the end, you have to decide just how bad the pain is, how much it is affecting your life, and what you're willing to do to deal with it. There's a lot more than just the pain with anyone having chronic pain from any source - Depression, family problems because they don't understand, "friends" who find other things to do besides being a friend anymore (Pain definitely shows you who your real friends are), not wanting to do anything, etc. Sound Familiar?

If the pain isn't that bad, there are several OTC meds I use when I don't feel like taking a Percocet or three (I use about 120-150 Percocet 10/325's per month, and have for the past 8 years). All work well in their own way:

1. Bayer Back and Body Aspirin - I get a lot of Tylenol with Percocet, so I'll use aspirin first. This stuff works fast and is great for any pain, nerve or otherwise.

2. Tylenol Extra Strength Rapid Release Gel-Tabs - I'll use these sometimes with Percocet, and sometimes without. They work within 20 minutes and are extremely

effective.

3. Aleve - Aleve is Naproxen in non-presciption dosages. Prescription is 500mg, they come in 220mg, so I use 2 1/2 tablets to get prescription strength. Naproxen is great for reducing inflammation, and lasts longer than the other two and you don't need as much. It's only drawback is that you need to get enough in your system to be effective, and takes a day or so.

If you've got specific questions about different therapies and want to expand on the problem, feel free to either post on my Message Board or send me an email to my WA address, posted at the top of my Bio. I've also added a link to the American Pain Foundation and a couple of other sites that might help.
