Find the tensioner, rotate it clockwise. I don't remember offhand what type of tool the tensioner requires for this vehicle... it'll either be a 3/8" drive ratchet inserted directly into the tensioner, or a socket (15mm is typical of GM).
how to release serpentine belt tensioner on 1991 C1500 Chevy Silverado?
Loosen the tensioner pulley on your 2001 Chevy Impala. The serpentine belt will become loose. Take the old belt off and put the new belt on. Tighten the new serpentine belt with the tensioner pulley.
Follow the route of the serpentine belt. It drives the alternator.
There is a diagram under the hood on a decal
usually serpentine belts get their tension(tightness) from the belt tensioner
put a wrench on it as to tighten the bolt. That will release the tension. You can also push down on it but that will require a second person to remove the serpentine belt.
Near the top of the serpentine belt path is a belt tensioner; it is spring loaded and has a shinney pulley on it. Insert a wrench into this tensioner and pull against it and the tension will be released so you can replace your belt. I am assuming your question is about the serpentine belt.
Use a socket and ratchet on the 1991 Astro vans serpentine belt tensioner pulley to pull it to the side, letting tension off of the belt. remove the belt and pun the new belt on. Release the tension to hold the new belt on.
i was never know what is the answer ,

On the belt tensioner you will see a spot to insert a half inch drive breaker bar or ratchet to move tensioner off belt.
there should be a square hole in the tensioner arm that you use a breaker bar and an extension in the hole and just turn the tensioner whatever direction that will loosen the belt.
