Graphic and fractional scales are two different things. A graphic scale on a map is a line marked with the lengths which represent real distances. It has a zero at one end. A fractional scale simply gives the ratio between map and real distances, e.g. 1: 10 000, so zero doesn't come into it.

What is the highest reading on the Richter scale of an earthquake?

The Richter scale has no upper and lower values, although in practical terms the lowest magnitude earthquakes that are capable of being recorded have a Richter magnitude of -3 (the minus numbers occur because Charles Richter chose an arbitrary seismic wave amplitude to equal a magnitude of 1 and seismometers have become more sensitive since then, so smaller seismic waves can be detected leading to magnitude values lower than 1). Conversely, the largest-ever earthquake recorded was a magnitude 9.5 event which occurred on May 22, 1960, in Valdivia, Chile. Some more background information It is thought that the asteroid impact event that occurred at the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary, 65.5 million years ago and thought to have contributed to the extinction of the dinosaurs (creating the Chicxulub crater), would have emitted energy equal to an earthquake of magnitude 12.5 on the Richter scale.

At what temperature will a reading on the Kelvin scale be three times the reading on the Fahrenheit scale?

At the approximate temperature 104.47 °F (313.41 K). . Calculating First, take the conversion formula K = (F + 459.67)*5/9 . and make equation, which suits to our purposes. F*3 = (F + 459.67)*5/9 . solve the equation . F*3 = F*5/9 + 255.37 F*3 - F*5/9 = 255.37 F*(27 - 5) = 2298.33 F = 104.47 . Let us check the result at . Well, 104.47 on Fahrenheit is 313.411 on Kelvin . 313.411 / 3 = 104.4703 . All right !

What temperature on the Fahrenheit scale is twice the reading on a Celsius scale?

320°F is the same temperature as 160°C. The formula is F = 1.8C + 32 For Fahrenheit to be twice the Celsius, let F = 2C Then . . . 1.8C + 32 = 2C 0.2C=32 C = 160°

How do you read a balance scale?

There are a couple different types of balance scales. For a triplebeam balance, balance the scale, place item in the pan, move thesliders starting with the largest, adjust weight to zero, and addthe riders for the total weight. For a one-pan scale, place item inone pan, estimate, place mass on free end until even, then add themasses for the total weight.

What temperature on the Fahrenheit scale twice the reading on the Celsius scale?

320°F is equal to the Celsius temperature 160°C.. Solved by the algebraic formula F = 2C where F = 1.8C + 32. 1.8C + 32 = 2C / .2C=32 / C = 160 .

How do you read a pound on a deli scale?

I think those indicate to a precision of a couple of decimalplaces, and then even calculate the price and print out a sticky label for theproduct container. So the whole-number pounds are the number before the decimal point.

Differentiate between main scale reading and vernier scale reading?

main scale is the least accurate reading on the device. the vernier scale uses an offset of divions that only allows one "line" or division to line up with the scale below. This scale is more accurate than the main scale. for example, the main scale may produce an accuracy of 0.125 of and inch plus or minus 0.125 of an inch, whereas the vernier would produce an accuracy of 0.025 of and inch. therefore if two divivions of the main scale and one division of the vernier scale were combined it would prodice and reading of (0.125+0.125+0.025 = 0.275) inches.

What is the highest reading on a Richter scale?

The highest reading on a Richter scale was 9.5. The earthquake withthe highest reading ever took place in 1960, in Valdivia, Chile.

How do you read a triple beam balance scale?

Make sure the weights on the hundreds, tens, and ones places are in the notch and a number is showing in the little window. Add these together. Then look at the scale with the slider. It is numbered in tenths of a gram. The little tick marks are hundredths of a gram. Count the tenths and add that to you number so far. Then count the number of little tick marks. That adds the hundredths place to your number.

How do you read a graphic novel?

How do you read a metric scale?

Exactly the way you read any other scale. Remember metric is based on ten, so if you have a ruler, a quarter of the way between 2 and 3 is not 2 1 / 4 " but 2.25 (cm)

How do you read a weight and height scale?

i am not sure i know what you are asking? do you mean the scale like you find a a doctors office? If so, measure height by extending the ruler up higher than the person you are measuring. Have the person stand with their back to the ruler, lower the ruler until the flat part is sitting on top of their head, and record the corresponding number on the ruler. As for the weight, use the balance. Move one weight at a time starting with the heavier weights (usually in 100lb increments) If the scale tips, put that weight back one notch and continue with the smaller weights until the bean rests level.

How to read log scale?

Log scales have there scales exponentially written. They are used to provide a detailed line for smaller values when on a normal graph this would be hard to see as they are too small. Most Log Scales use base 10, so this tutorial is for that. If your log scale uses a different base (it will not be segmented by multiples of 10, eg: 0.1, 1.0, 10, 100), just substitute your number in.. 1. On the x scale identify where your number lies. Mine lies between 10 and 100.. 2. Find the ratio your number is along your section of the log scale. So I measure the distance from 10 to my number and divide it by the distance from 10 to 100.. The distance to my number from 10 = 20 mm. The distance to 100 from 10 = 100 mm. Therefore the ratio = 20/100 = 0.2. 3. Find the value of your number by this formula: 10^(ratio) x previous log marker. For me this = 10^0.2 x 10. = 1.585 x 10 = 15.85. 4. You're done! your answer is 15.85 (x scale units).. Another example: your value lies 3/4 of the way between 0.01 and 0.1. =10^0.75 x 0.01 = 5.623 x 0.01 = 0.0056

Reading and using statement of scale graphic scale and scale shown by representative fraction method?

To convert map measurements to actual distance, measure the scale distance on the map and multiply by the denominator of the scale (the larger number in the ratio). e.g. two cm on a 1:25000 map equals 2x25000 = 50,000 cm or 500 meters.

How do you read the pH scale?

How do you read deli scales in ounces?

There are sixteen ounces in a pound, by American weight. If the deli scale shows, for example, 1.25, that means that the 1 means one pound, and the .25 means a quarter of a pound (use your knowledge of decimal math: .25 = quarter, or 25%, .5 = half, or 50 %, etc.) If you need to know the total ounces that represents, 1 = 16 ounces and .25 is one quarter of sixteen, and 16 divided by 4, = 4 ounces Add sixteen and four, and you get 20 ounces total weight. Keep in mind that if the item being weighed is in a container, the container has weight of its own. The deli clerk should subtract the container's weight (T.A.R.E.) from the total weight, so that you don't pay the item's per pound price for the container.

Why is zero not always on the far left on a graphic scale?

What is the definition of fractional scale?

A fractional scale is a way that map makers tell you what distances on the map represent in real life. It does not use any units, so the scale might state 1:100000 [or 1/100000] which means that 1 unit on the map represents 100000 units in the real world. For example if you measure off 1 cm on the map, this represents 100000 cm (equivalent to 1000 m or 1 km) in the real world. See related link, below.

How do you draw a graphic scale?

A graphic scale allows whoever is viewing the document or image to get an understanding of how large the image is. To accomplish this, you want to draw the scale with exponentially increasing increments, so that the viewer can easily compare the scale increments to the image displayed. For example, if the drawing is at 1/8" = 1' scale, the first increment would be 1 scale foot, then 2 scale feet (1x2), then 4 scale feet (2x2), then 8 scale feet (4x2), and then 16 scale feet (8x2). 0__1__2_____4__________8____________________16 As long as you keep the scale at increments that double at each increase, the scale will remain easy to read and allow for comprehensive comparison between the scale and the image.

How do you read a doctor's scale?

To read a beam scale like the ones at the doctor's office, you start by making sure the scale is zeroed. The beam pointer must rest at the center mark with no weight on the platform. If the device is not zeroed, make sure the large and small sliding poises (weights) are at their zero position all the way to the left. If the pointer still doesn't rest at the center mark then use the zero adjustment screw, usually at the left side of the beam to correct it. Once the scale is zeroed, you take a weight reading by first estimating your approximate weight and sliding the small and large poises along their beams. The large poise increases the weight by large increments such as 50lbs while the small poise is used to increase the weight by finer increments of 0.25lb or so. Step onto the scale platform and adjust the position of the small poise until the beam pointer rests at the center mark (balanced). The weight reading is taken by adding the value of the poise positions. So if the scale balances with the large poise at the 150lb position, and the small poise at the 3.5lb position, your weight is 153.5lb.

How do you read weight scale?

How do you read an academic grading scale?

Here is part of an academic grading scale: A = 94-100% A- = 90-93 % B+ = 87-89 % If your percentage is 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, or 100, or any fractions between, like 94.001, then your grade on this grading scale is an "A." The difficult part of reading such a scale is knowing what the teacher might do with scores that fall between the cracks; for example, what grade is 93.5%? It could be either an "A" or an "A-". Sometimes teachers round up to the next highest grade; sometimes teachers round up from, for example, 93 .5; Sometimes teachers do not deal with fractions. Ask your teacher how to interpret the grading scale more precisely.
