When using this technique, the rescuer should use one hand to push down on the victim's forehead and with the other hand, lift the victim's chin.

Important: this technique is not to be used in case of trauma as it may further injure the spine.

Assess ABC and ensure the person is unable to maintain their own airway.



Ensure there is no history of neck pain/neck trauma (e.g. falling from a height off a ladder head first). If there is suspicion of neck trauma, conduct a jaw thrust.


Lie the patient on their back.


Place two fingers below the chin, find the recess. Lift up gently, keeping gentle pressure on the forehead to stabilise the head.


The airway is now opened and you must continue to hold in this position until more advanced airway adjuncts can be used, by yourself if you are trained and comfortable or by an advanced care practitioner (e.g. oropharyngeal/nasopharngeal airways, Laryngeal Mask Airways, Intubation)
