For a bicycle:

1. Remove every component you do not want painted (recommend you remove everything but the frame)

2. If your bike already has a paint job you should take some 00 or 01 grit sandpaper to it to take off the clear coat and paint.

3. After your bike is sanded and ready to go prime it.

4. After priming (and letting it dry for at least 8 hours) your bike you can lay on the first coat of your desired color

5. Add at LEAST two more thin coats of your desired color

6. Hang to dry, or set in a dust free area to dry.

7. If you want a clear coat, apply in the same way after base color has dried

Technique:

Lay on spray paint coats in thin layers to avoid running (multiple thin layers is better than one or two thick layers)

Let each coat of paint dry COMPLETELY before you start the next one to avoid runs

DO NOT touch your piece while it is drying. Tie your hands if you have to. Touching a wet auto/bike paint job could result in nicking or scarring the paint job and would require starting all over again.

For a good paint job, you cannot cut corners. Be patient and you will be rewarded.

Personally, I wouldn't. Just about all paints that can be applied at home will be a lot softer than the factory paint, meaning that it will nick, chip and scratch a lot easier than the factory paint.

When I well and truly feel that it HAS TO be painted, I'll strip it, sand it down, mask it off halfheartedly and paint with hammerite and a brush. It's not particularly pretty, but at least the effort matches the result. Something that is rarely the case with a full DIY paintjob.

If you were to attempt this on your own you would probably want to sand the finish off so that the paint melds with the wood and does not just sit on top of the finish....you will ruin your Guitars sound by doing this by weighing down the soundboard and not allowing it to vibrate correctly.

How to paint a guitar in the color of your choice. There are several different ways to paint a guitar. For this website I'm going to be concentrating on the easiest way, and if anyone out there wants to have a go at painting their own guitar you'd be better following this easy way rather than a complicated one. DISCLAIMER: This guide is not exhaustive in the slightest. I have provided this as a quick reference as to how to paint a guitar. For fuller, more in-depth guidance, try ordering the e-books from paintyourownguitar.com, they're fantastic. Also, my links page shows websites which have more comprehensive guidance. I will not be held responsible for anyone who does not achieve their desired finish. Step 1Take the gloss lacquered finish off of the guitar. As you can see in this picture, the sheen has been removed.http://wiki.answers.com/Q/images/sanded.jpg Sanded down. Step 2 You need to sand the body down so that the primer will stick evenly to the body (and not run off the sheen), and then the paint sticks to the primer. The advantage with using aerosols is that they're cheaper than a professional spray gun and readily available - you can get them from most shops that sell bits for cars, as car spray paint is the same stuff! Tip: To avoid doing what I had to do (I had to paint in my garage due to the 'great' British weather...) suspend the guitar body from a washing line or similar, using a bit of wire through the neck holes. This way you can walk around the guitar and get both sides of the guitar done at once. Leave this to dry then build up another couple of coats, until you have a grey, matt-finish guitar. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/images/primer.jpg What it should look like with the primer. Step 3 Sand the body, start spraying the paint Tip: Do not worry if your first couple of coats do not seem to be matching to the color you bought. They will react with the primer (and also the color underneath) and probably give you a lighter coat. This will disappear with every coat you apply. Remember you will probably need five or six coats to achieve a full, gloss finish. The following pictures show the color differences between coats - the first picture is after only two coats, the second is after five. (This is the guitar from project-strat.com) http://wiki.answers.com/Q/images/paint2ndcoat.jpg Painted. Notice the difference in color between coats (the more coats the deeper the color). Step 4 Once you have applied the final coat, and the finish is to your liking, leave to dry overnight. Tip: If you are planning on applying any custom decals to the guitar, you may wish to apply them now, so that they will be under the lacquer. At this stage it needs to be clear coated. When this is finished, and you have applied the final coat of lacquer, leave this to dry for a day or two. Once this has dried, pick it up and admire your work

Depends on what result you want. First off wipe it down real carefully with a degreaser to get it squeaky clean. Then suspend bike so that you have all round access to paint it.

For fast and ugly I recommend Hammerite and a brush. For fast and slicker, plenty of thin coats of rattle can paint. For arty, get an airbrush. For moderate style, but good durability - get it powdercoated.

Do note that whatever paint you put on at home is likely to be softer and chip/scratch easier than the old factory paint.

With a lot of effort. On a steel frame you can scrape with an industrial razorblade/box cutter blade, sand, wire brush, use a chemical stripper or have it media blasted.

Any other material you're pretty much limited to careful sanding.

The paint can be taken out with an old tooth brush with the help of a magic paint. That is apply all the magic paint all through the bike and remove it with a brush.

Another item is using a blade with a stripper gel. That is, apply stripping gel all over the bike and remove it with a blade
