Phenergan (promethazine), when given via injection should always be injected into a large muscle. Ventrogluteal is the best site (hip-buttocks area). It should NEVER be injected IV push as it is a vesicant and causes severe irritation to the vessel walls including scleroses (forming scar tissue within a vein). If you do this, you'll notice the vein crimping up under your skin.

If it is accidentally injected into an artery, it CAN potentially lead to gangrene. If given IV, which is really never done as there are better IV alternatives, it must be greatly diluted and administered slowly and there are still risks of tissue damage.

Stick to IM injections. In the rear end. And dont try to give them to yourself. Have someone who knows the anatomical landmarks and how to give IMs correctly.

WHOA! Do your homework! Injecting promethazine directly into a vein can cause severe vascular damage and necrosis. This should be done only in a hospital.
