If you can't get into Canada to visit due to having a felony on your record for grand theft but you married a Canadian in the US could you get into Canada as his wife?

The person with the criminal record can get married to the American citizen, BUT they will NOT be granted residence in the USA. The same applies to Americans who have a criminal record, they are BARRED from entering Canada. We don't like to swap criminals.
The only alternative, and it takes a while, is to apply for a PARDON from the Canadian Government, if the conviction took place more than FIVE years ago.
The application takes about 6 months to be approved and they will do a VERY deep check on the person's life and honesty, before it is granted. The application requires a cash fee, and a finger print set done by the RCMP.

Before 9/11, individuals entering Canada from the United States only needed to show either a U.S. Passport or other proof of U.S. citizenship. Now people crossing the border are subject to criminal background checks.

If it is a summary charge, usually the customs officers will allow you in. You must have the appropriate paperwork to back up your claim that it is a summary charge.
If it is an indictable offence (more serious crime), it is unlikely they will let you in without a US Entry Waiver.
