When a neutron collides and bonds to the nucleus of a uranium-235 atom, the atom becomes unstable and splits. When this happens energy is released (and two or three more neutrons which then restart the cycle causing a chain reaction). The energy is used to heat water until it turns into steam, the pressurised steam is then used to turn some turbines which drive an electrical generator. And voila! You have nuclear power!

Nuclear reactors get their energy from heat generated through nuclear fission. Sub atomic particles collide with Uranium isotopes that break apart sending more particles to collide with more atoms thus creating a chain reaction. When the nuclear bonds of the uranium atoms are broken, it releases massive amounts of energy especially heat. The heat generated from the reaction is used to vaporize water and turn electricity generating turbines.

I found the website K1 Project very helpful. They had several articles underneath their Learn/Energy tab which should answer any questions about nuclear fusion.
