Laminating a paper is either done with self-laminating paper (that is one with adhesive backing that sticks to the document and is clear vinyl or plastic), and can be laminate one side or both sides of the document, or with heat-laminating sheets made of a bifurcated clear laminate sheet that the document is inserted into and then placed in a machine that has heated rollers that melt the bifurcated sheet into one which encapsulates the document, protecting it from the lements. the laminate sheets having varying thicknesses according to the desired use of the laminated document.

Use a photo laminating machine with laminating pouch. The Photo Pro 13 by Lamitek is a good option. Remember laminating is permanent! It is best to only laminate digital or copies of original photos in case of error during laminating the photo is not lost.

There are various machines available to laminate paper, ranging from inexpensive tabletop models up to large commercial high speed floor model laminators. Laminating paper goes back to the 1930's when a patent was issued for a machine that applied tape using heat and pressure. As plastics and technology evolved, several patents were granted for machines using heat and pressure to secure adhesive coated polyvinyl materials securely to paper, photos, posters etc. Over the last 50 years, with the advancement of plastics and electronics, today's laminating machines have become high speed production machines capable of laminating large posters, using crystal clear polyvinyl or polyolefin films, for ever lasting protection.

Basic laminating can be done at home or at small business using an inexpensive pouch laminator. Simply insert a picture into a special plastic pouch and feed it into the rollers of the pouch laminator. In roughly 45 seconds, the picture will be sealed indefinitely using a combination of heat, pressure and adhesive.

Larger floor model roll laminators use large continuous rolls of plastic film which is fed between large heated rollers and/or heat shoes to seal the film to the printed substrate. The film comes in various thicknesses and levels of gloss for the desired finish. Some machines are designed to apply the film to both sides of the substrate for a complete seal, while others are capable of applying to just one side for cost effective protection of the image. Nowadays there are also cold lamination machines capable of quality protection without the use of heat. Heat can lead to wrinkles, curling and other issues that may effect the end result.
