Chipmunks don't generally infest the upper structure of buildings. They prefer ground boroughs or holes into your cellar. However, squirrels prefer the top level in a structure. They tend towards warm attics, or can live in walls. Check your houses sophets for any cracks or separation points that they may have gotten in through, although they can chew through nearly anything if they are determined enough.
Tell tale signs of a squirrel or chipmunk infestation:
Little rice, tic-tac or mike-n-ike size feces- dark brown to black in color.
Holes in bags.
Chewed carpeting.
Vibrant pungent yellow urine.
It is also possible that you might have a raccoon or opossum infestation. These creatures aren't just more clever, but more dangerous. I wouldn't advise attempting to treat an infestation yourself.
Keep your eyes peeled for signs of pests and alert animal control.
Well most of the time Chip monks have lighter colors than squirrels, but u can tell by the bushiness of a squirrels tail between the almost roundness of a Chip monks. Chipmunks are much smaller and have shorter fur and tails. See the links below.

yes
Well, there are tiny holes in the attic that are not visible to the naked eye. Also, attics are usually old and creaky and dusty, a perfect room for rats, and rats can squeeze themselves through very tight spaces, but there is a solution to this: Try to lay one or more traps in your attic, or just call the exterminator, but traps are more efficient and a lot less expensive. So, um...
because they live in our attic. we just trapped a flying squirrel in our attic.
She thinks she hears rats in the attic.

rats can jump pretty far, but I doubt that it would be able to enter your attic. Also, do you have a hole in your roof or something?
