It is true that daffodils are one of the best surviving bulbs around, but it can be killed.

Here are some of the ways:

  • If you pull the plant and forget about the bulbs, they will dry out. Once dried, you can't get them back.
  • If the bulbs are allowed to stand in water-logged soil, they will rot and disappear.
  • Dow Chemicals has a Tordon Brushkiller with penetrant that is supposed to work.
  • Don't use a broadleaf herbicide - daffodils are narrow leaf and thrive on getting rid of the competing broadleaf "weeds".
  • The herbicide "Roundup" does work on daffodils once they emerge. If the bloom is gone and the leaves have yellowed, Roundup will not work. It needs actively growing vegetation.

Daffodils never need pruning as they are herbaceous perennials and not woody shrubs. It is best to pick or cut the daffodil flowers and stems for bouquets, as this will save the plant the energy of maintaining the bloom. Some people don't like to cut flowers, and in that case the plant should be "dead-headed" once the flower starts to wilt. When the leaves turn yellow, about 4 weeks after flowers are gone, they can be removed, as the plant has finished using them.

Daphne does not need to be pruned. The only reason you would prune is to remove broken, or damaged branches. Prune after flowering, and cut below a bud.

To propagate a particular cultivar you brek off and grow on the small bulbs that form on the mother bulb every year. To try and produce species in bulk sow seed.

You'll have to dig them up. Hopefully you'll give them to a friend, relative, or lucky stranger.
