Controlling environmental stress, following proper cultivation procedures, respecting natural enemies, and using insecticides are ways to eliminate aphids.

Specifically, the insects in question (Aphidoidea superfamily) appear in response to environmental stress. Plants become less stressed when soil is aerated, fertile, moist, and well-drained. A soil analysis conducted every 3 years detects the absence or presence of the 16 - 17 necessary soil nutrients and details the proper corrections.

Natural enemies include lacewings, ladybugs, and praying mantids. The three above-mentioned examples of beneficial insects may be more likely to flourish in certain environments. For example, native plants such as cardinal flower, coneflower, and Joe Pye weed will attract birds and butterflies as well.

Insecticides can be either non-organic or organic. But such effective non-organic insecticides as malathion and permethrin have environmentally unfriendly after- and side-effects. The use of canola or neem horticultural oils and insecticidal soap may require more frequent application schedules. But they will not impact nature or people negatively.

Ladybugs and ladybug larvae are natural predaors of aphids.

There are many gentle pesticides that kill aphids as well, while some people report success with soapy water.

The related link below lists some more natural methods for killing aphids.

There are several methods, but the easiest way to get rid of aphids is with plain water. Simply hose down your plants with a moderately strong stream and it will knock about 95% of them off. If your roses are young or delicate, you can simply weaken the stream and pour the water over the plants instead of spraying it on. You may have to run your fingers over the stems and leaves to help loosen the bugs with this method.

There are also numerous different insecticides on the market that are labeled as being able to control the spread of aphids. I don't personally advise taking this course of action, though, because I have personally tried many and they have not worked very effectively. Also, many cannot be used on roses because of their high sensitivity to many things.

Aphids tend to attack plants that are stressed. A common stress is drought. Generally, plants need to be watered whenever there hasn't been a rain or snow fall event within the last 7-10 days. It's best to subject aphids to environmentally-friendly controls, and to beneficial insects. The friendliest controls are botanicals, horticultural oils, and insecticidal soaps. They may need several applications. But they do the least harm to plants, and to wildlife. Beneficial insects are natural enemies of pests. Examples are lacewings, ladybugs, parasitic wasps, and praying mantids. Ladybugs are particularly effective controls of aphids. Beneficial insects may be ordered by phone, mail, or internet. Or their presence may be encouraged by growing native plants such as cardinal flower, coneflower, and Joe pye weed.

You can get rid of Aphids, soft bodied insects, by simply wiping them away with a cloth, or with a small blast from a water hose. Alternatively, if the infection is big, you can try insecticide.

Squirt them with a weak soap solution with a hand sprayer bottle. This suffocates them while not harming the ladybirds that also prey on them.

How do you get rid of aphids without harming milkweed plants?

The introduction of natural enemies and the use of organic controls are ways to get rid of aphids without harming milkweed plants. Ladybugs tend to be the most beloved, diligent, intrepid beneficial insects to introduce and support when dealing with aphids. Horticultural oils against eggs and insecticidal soaps against immature and mature stages will not harm milkweeds or milkweed-lovers such as monarch butterflies.

Does planting chives in the garden help get rid of aphids?

Yes, planting chives in the garden helps get rid of aphids.Specifically, aphids disdain strongly aromatic plants. Alliums such as chives, garlic, leeks, onions and shallots fit the bill. They will be repugnant to such unlikeable pests as aphids, carrot flies, fruit tree borers, and weevils. They will limit the growth of the gardener's beans and peas - which therefore should not be planted companionably nearby - but protect roses from ants.

What pesticide would control aphids?

Attention to cultivation requirements, introduction of natural enemies, removal by gloved hand or mechanical tool, row covers, and use of horticultural oils and insecticidal soaps are environmentally friendly ways to get rid of aphids. Heavy aphid presences indicate such environmental stress as prolonged drought or human error as over-fertilizing, over-watering, or under-watering. Plants whose heat, light, moisture and nutrient needs are respected tend to have fewer problems with such swarming insect pests as aphids and mealybugs.
