Keep Squirrels Out of BirdfeedersSquirrels are extremely inventive and persistent and can figure out most feeders. Go to a bird specialty store and look for squirrel proof feeders and talk to the store people about how they work. Also, if you put safflower seed only in the feeders, you will attract a lot of birds, but aquirrels don't like them. Everyone loves black oil sunflower seed, so if it is out, it'll be eaten! I have a tube feeler with a very heavy cage around it that allows the smaller birds to get in and feed at the feed ports. The squirrels absolutley can't get in, but will hunt for seeds on the ground. Droll Yankee and others companies make these and they are quite good. Droll Yankee will replace free any parts for the life of the feeder as well. The short answer is that the squirrels won't ever stop completely, but you can slow them down. You can also put out corn just for them, away from your feeders. Good luck!
  • There are a few brands of bird seed with chilli powder or "hot stuff" in it. Squirrels and just about every other mammals will not like it. It doesn't work idefinitely, but by the time a squirrel would build up a tolerance it won't be interested in that bird feeder anymore.
  • You can put a PVC pipe for a pole and put your feeder on top, but you must make it pretty high. Put vaseline all over the PVC pipe. It will keep the squirrels from climbing.

There are many ways no doubt people have tried to keep the squirrels off feeders. My friend finally purchased a bird feeder with a rechargeable battery that twirls fast whenever a squirrel tries to get on it -- the twirling is set off by weight. The little birds can sit on the rim with no problem, fully enjoying their seeds and the squirrels now have to be content with waiting on the ground for dropped seeds lest they want to get really dizzy or be flipped off. It is called a "Yankee Flipper". A Google search would lead you to many resources for this feeder. It didn't take very long for the feeder to pay for itself from the money saved on bird seed now being used just for the birds instead of feasts for the squirrels.

To keep squirrels out of your bird feeders you will have to move it away from trees and structures and mount it high enough on a pole that they can not jump or climb to get the bird feed. You can also get a squirrel proof bird feeder which keeps the squirrels out of the feed.

You may play Red-Tailed-Hawk sound. This will scare the squirells, not the Songbirds. OR you may purchase a feeder with a cage around it. However, if you would like to attract larger birds (such as cardinals, jays woodpeckers and other large birds.) do NOT purchase one. You may buy suiet of which squirlls do not eat. HOPE THIS HELPS:D

one answer:

Good luck with that. Squirrels are amazingly clever and resourceful, and even bird-feeders that claim to be squirrel-proof are not that way for very long. You might be better off trying to distract the squirrels by putting down some sunflower seeds somewhere away from the bird feeder-- squirrels are not inclined to share, so if they have their own food supply, they will often leave the bird feeder alone.

another answer:

People claim many ways to keep squirrels off your bird pole but none of them seem to work consistently...those pesky critters always come back. One thing I've tried that does work is a product called Squirrel Grease: the squirrels can't get up your bird feeder and its pretty weather resistant.

To keep a squirrel from eating out of bird feeders, buy a squirrel-resistant feeder. Another option is to buy bird food that squirrels do not like to eat.

If a squirrel was near a bird-feeder will the birds stay away from the bird-feeder?

Not in my experience. I put up a four perch feeder on a tree in myfront yard. A squirrel reached over to feed from it. I chased it away. The birds still came at feeding time to eat. I just wish there was a way to keep the House Sparrows away from it. They are so aggressive when they feed. Attacking each other and the Cardinals that I do attract. I extended the feeder out more to keep the acrobatic squirrel out and taped off three of the perches. This kept the crowding down and the cardinals have more to eat when they come now. What a bird feeder must have?

There are different types of bird feeders. Some are fly through, which means it is open and the birds fly into it and eat. Then there are perch type bird feeders where the birds sit on perches and eat. There are also weight sensitive bird feeders where you can set the weight you want. If a bird is big, the openings in the bird feeder closes, keeping them out of the food. There are also squirrel-proof bird feeders which keep the squirrels out of your wild bird feed.

Can you put a bird feeder next to a bird nest house?

You can, but I wouldn't recommend it. All of the traffic might keep the mother from sitting on the nest.

How do you keep squirrels away?

Squirrel feeders are one option for keeping squirrels away from bird feeders and other parts of the property.Specifically, squirrels really love nuts, especially those of the black walnut tree (Juglans nigra). It is possible to set up a feeder or feeding corner with a squirrel mix that is store-bought or homemade. Otherwise, it is difficult to keep squirrels away from a feeder or area of the property that has gotten their attention.

Will orioles scare hummingbirds away from a my hummingbird feeder?

Not really. Most likely when the orioles come the hummingbirds will fly away. However, when the oriole leaves the hummingbirds will return again. If the hummingbirds do not return put up a oriole feeder that should keep it away from the hummingbird feeder.

There are several cats running loose in my neighborhood and scaring birds away from my bird feeder. Can anything be done about the cats running loose I have to keep my dog on a leash. Is there no similar requirement for cats ?

Communities do not generally have laws prohibiting cats from running free, but there are ways to keep them away from your bird feeder. The most obvious is to position the feeder high enough off the ground and far enough from trees and branches so the cat can't get at it. If this doesn't help, there are sprays and electronic deterrents such as CatStop (which should cost less than $50). Also, you say you have a dog. If your yard is fenced, you might try keeping him in the area near the bird feeders. Cats generally don't hang around dogs.

How do you get rid of the cowbirds at a bird feeder that are keeping the other wild birds away?

Just scare it away OR you can build another bird feeder This is not an answer. We have several feeders and they fly to all of them and keep all the birds away. Obviously you're not an expert. According to the staff at WBU--stop using black oil sunflower seeds--in fact clean out the feeders to no smell or residue is left. I did this and almost all my cowbirds are gone. They are feeding on what they find that was left on the ground. I had dozens and now it is down to a couple every now and then
