Check that the original game has been installed to it's default directory path. Because the expansion assumes that this is the case. If the expansion can't find the main game where it should be, it won't install. well you do need the first game it will ask you too put in diablo 2 discs to do install so yes you do need diablo 2 for diablo 2:LOD intaliation. i think its simply using info off diablo 2 for the expation so thay didt have to put more info on the diablo 2:LOD CD.

I have already installed the original Diablo 2 so I tried to install the expansion set but when it opened it said that Diablo 2 had to be installed first how do I fix it so that I can install it?
One thing to try is to make sure that you installed the original game in it's default path. Because the expansion looks down the default path and if it doesn't see the original game there, it assumes the original is not yet installed. This may be the reason, I can not be positive though.
